Though being an avatar of Lord Vishnu, it was a herculean task for Lord Ram to defeat the Trilokpati (conqueror of the universe), Ravan. After defeating Ravan, Lord Ram along with his colleagues and close associates went to Ashok Vatika to bring back Sita. Sita was all ready to see her husband after such an eternity. Instead of being cheerful Lord Ram was in a dilemma, Sita ready to grasp the warmth of her husband, Lord Ram intervened and stopped Sita. Everyone in the surrounding went dumbstruck even Laxman could not understand what had just happened. Lord Ram in public announced that Sita has to give Agni Pariksha (Fire test) then only he would accept her. Sita was as calm as she knew this was gonna happen. Laxman for the first time in his life was furious at his elder brother whom he considered as his god. Laxman in a melancholic voice asked what the hell was going inside his bother's mind and that he didn't trust the purity of Goddess Sita, whom Laxman considered as his mother.
The story that very few people know about Agni Pariksha
Ram explained his brother, Rama knew that Ravana would change form and abduct Sita. Therefore, he had informed Sita in this regard. Both started this Leela. Accordingly, the real Sita was handed over to Agni dev(deity) and a promise was taken that Sita would be withdrawn from Agni only after the slaying of Ravana. Sita's shadow, in turn, will lead Lankesh (Ravan) to the reflection. So did happen. The entire time in Lanka was her shadow, not the actual Sita.
Laxman was sorry for doubting his brother's decision, Laxman produced fire at the behest of Shri Ram. Sita Mata was called upon to go through it. She passed through the fire, and a few moments later the Agni Deity appeared. Real Sita Mata was direct with him. Thus Sita Mata came back to Shri Ram. Seeing this scene, the entire Vanara Sena including Laxman, Hanuman, Sugriva, Angad, Jamwant became emotional.
